Lung Cancer Awareness for Families in Rochester

Understanding Lung Cancer

Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer deaths, but awareness and early detection can save lives. For Pakistani American families, understanding risk factors and screening options is essential.

Risk Factors

Smoking: The primary cause of lung cancer. Both cigarette smoking and hookah use increase risk significantly.

Secondhand Smoke: Living with smokers increases non-smokers' risk.

Environmental Factors: Radon exposure, air pollution, workplace chemicals.

Family History: Genetic factors may increase susceptibility.

Previous Lung Disease: Conditions like COPD increase risk.

Screening Recommendations

Low-dose CT scans are recommended for high-risk individuals:

  • Ages 50-80
  • 20+ pack-year smoking history
  • Current smoker or quit within past 15 years

Discuss with your doctor whether screening is right for you.

Warning Signs

Seek evaluation for:

  • Persistent cough
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Hoarseness
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Recurring respiratory infections

Prevention

Quit Smoking: The single most important step. Resources available through healthcare providers.

Avoid Secondhand Smoke: Create smoke-free home and car environments.

Test for Radon: Home testing kits are inexpensive and easy to use.

Maintain Healthy Lifestyle: Exercise and diet support overall lung health.

Hookah Awareness

A special note for our community: hookah (shisha) is not a safe alternative to cigarettes. One hookah session can equal smoking 100+ cigarettes in smoke exposure.
